Asset Management 101

AM 101 provides an introduction to Asset Management principles and concepts. Over the last few years, the challenges of managing physical assets have grown. Asset-intensive companies are faced with aging assets, hyper-competitive markets, change-resistive culture, unpreparedness for digital-ready world, climate change, and ever-tightening constraints on funding. Today’s asset managers must integrate asset, business, and risk management principles to strategically manage their organization’s assets. The modern asset manager focuses on multi-dimensional business processes that harmonize asset information across organizational silos to make financially optimized asset management decisions. The ISO 5500x family of standards provides guidelines for organizations to develop sustainable asset management approaches and be able to respond appropriately to constraints and opportunities within their operating contexts.
This course focuses on global best-in-class practices to holistically manage assets and optimize levels of service over their life cycles. The course is anchored on three pillars, asset performance, asset risk management and business/financial management. The course content is mapped to the ISO 5500x family of standards and the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management (GFMAM) Asset Management Landscape. The course is designed to be multi-disciplinary, in order to foster effective cross-functional team approach when participants return to their workplaces. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion on successful completion of the course.

The walkthrough of the progression of the history of Value-Based Decision (VBD) Making was spot on from early approaches to what we are doing today in asset management. The depth of comprehensive public works A/E projects have always been stakeholder centric but had shortfalls in analysis of both asset performance and maintenance to build and operate better for future design or rehabilitation. New design thinking (UX) concepts also seem overlap into VBD. This value progression presented a great melding of these approaches in a concise way and in the context of ISO guidelines.

I found the AM101 a very engaging self pace course that gave me the fundamentals of learning at my own self pace. It was structured in a way that the course tested your knowledge base right from the beginning to the end. It provided me an excellent opportunity to ask further questions and to easily navigate back and forth the course material to keep me very interested in how the governance and concepts of good AM can really add stakeholder value. The AM101 course really made me realize how important this business management system is to the future strategic direction of our organization.
